Our Mission
DownUnder Dollar exists for one reason: to make personal finance genuinely accessible for everyday Australians. No jargon walls. No gatekeeping. No condescending tone. Just clear, honest, and actionable money guidance that meets you where you are.
Whether you're a uni student trying to understand your HECS debt, a young professional wondering if you should salary sacrifice into super, or a couple saving for your first home — we're here to help you make confident financial decisions.
Who's Behind This
I'm Mahsun Kemp, the founder and primary writer at DownUnder Dollar. I started this blog because I was frustrated by how unnecessarily complicated Australian personal finance felt — especially for people in their 20s and 30s who didn't grow up talking about money.
I'm not a financial adviser (and I'll always tell you when you should speak to one). What I am is someone who's spent years researching, learning, and applying personal finance strategies in the Australian context — and I believe that knowledge should be shared freely.
Our Values
Accuracy first. We fact-check every claim, cite our sources, and update articles when rules change. Australian tax and super laws shift frequently, and outdated advice is dangerous advice.
Independence matters. While we do earn revenue through affiliate partnerships and advertising (see our full disclosure), our recommendations are never influenced by commercial relationships. If a product isn't good for our readers, we won't recommend it — regardless of what commission is on offer.
Accessibility always. We write for humans, not search engines. Every article is written to be understood by someone with zero financial background. If you need a finance degree to understand our content, we've failed.
Australian-specific. Generic American finance advice doesn't work here. Our super system, tax brackets, HECS indexation, negative gearing, franking credits — it's all different. Every article is written specifically for the Australian context.
How We Make Money
Transparency is important to us. DownUnder Dollar earns revenue through:
- Affiliate partnerships — When we recommend products (like savings accounts or super comparison tools) and you sign up through our links, we may receive a commission at no extra cost to you.
- Display advertising — We run ads on the site. We try to keep these unobtrusive and relevant.
- Sponsored content — Occasionally, we partner with brands for sponsored posts. These are always clearly labelled.
Importantly: our editorial content is never influenced by commercial relationships. We recommend what we genuinely believe is best for our readers. Full details in our Affiliate Disclosure.
